Program Description

The Small Business Construction Program is designed to introduce and familiarize small, minority, women-owned and disadvantage business contractors with management tools to become stronger enterprises. It will not only help these entities grow, but ensure that their growth is sustained. The program topics will address topics that are traditionally challenging for minority and women business contractors and offer them the opportunity to become economically viable business enterprises with the tolls to manage construction projects efficiently and effectively.

Participants will gain construction industry insights and learn processes that will help them manage and guide their businesses through growth. Enrollment will also give participants the opportunity to grow their businesses through new relationships with other companies and with the I-15 Express Lane project team.

Program Goals

The Small Business Construction Program provides training in the fundamental areas of construction business management – areas that typically prove challenging for small, minority, women-owned and disadvantage businesses. The program also provides opportunities to network with other contractors and learn from each other. Also, to develop sustain relationships with key personnel within Skanska-Ames, JV and other relevant business organizations.

Who Should Attend

  • Certified DBE, SBE, and non-certified local – Inland Empire firms
  • Contractors with a CA contractor’s license
  • Contractors eager to learn about what is involve working on public works and/or RCTC projects
  • Contractors not afraid of assigned homework
  • Contractors looking for networking opportunities with Skanska-Ames managers

About the Training

The eight week program covers the full array of strategies, techniques and tools that minority and women businesses need to succeed in the construction industry. The information is organized in a format tailored to contractors, subcontractors, trades-people, managers, superintendents, supervisors and project managers.

Class instructors are drawn from the Skanska-Ames, JV team, and also include industry-leading professionals teaching using real world experiences and construction management examples. The program includes lectures, group discussions and hands-on demonstrations in proven business practices.

Each participant who completes the course will receive a Certificate of Completion. There is not charge for attendance.
